Thoughts On Unschooling Two Years In
2012
The other day at the grocery store I left Austin to explore the toy isle while I went to go get Q-Tips. When I came back, I stayed back for a minute to watch him. He was talking quietly to himself, exploring his options, deciding which toy would best fit his need. Looking at him I felt grateful he is home with me and not in school.
Because he's home and not in school he can sit in the toy isle and contemplate which action figure to get without worry. He can STILL like action figures and Star Wars and super heroes. He can spend as much time as he needs in the toy isle because I don't need to hurry up and get dinner in the oven so he can eat, then do homework, then get to bed.
Slow mornings where he gets to watch a TV show if he wants to. This morning he did, and I went out front to turn the soil in my garden. No rush, no hurry. We both did what we wanted to to welcome in the day.
When I came in he asked if we could have a water balloon fight. You betcha! Turning soil is hard work and I was hot and covered from head to toe in dirt. We went upstairs and got our swim suits on and started filling balloons. A brief fight ensued, but mostly Austin wanted to see how full they could get before popping or he would throw them at the house to watch them explode.

While Austin filled balloons, I took the opportunity to take pictures of this friendly, little bird who frequents our yard. It's so curious about us.
I named him Gale.
Poor Suzi, she looks so hot and it's only May. She's pretty though, isn't she?
In October we got pumpkins to carve and never actually did it. I took the pumpkins outside and put them in a shady spot in our yard and waited to see what would happen. It took months, and months before they collapsed and then, slowly but surely they started to sprout. I'm so curious to see what will happen to them. I wonder if we'll actually get a pumpkin. I'm haven't done anything with them so far, but I may have to start giving them some attention soon.
These the reasons I love Austin being home. Slow mornings, excitement about birds and pumpkins, water balloons at noon and soaking up our time together with laughter and spontaneity.
