Thoughts On Unschooling Four Months In
2011
In August we went to the homeschool conference here in California and I picked a session given by Sandra Dodd called Partnerships and Teams In The Family. The title resonated with me because it felt like the thing we were most lacking in our home was partnership.
One hour of listening to Sandra speak shook me to my core. I was a quivering mess by the end. Her words hit me in the heart and I knew in that moment the ways I was trying to control and manipulate my family were over. Hello connection, partnership and hopefully peace.
I read this online today and it's what I am feeling right now:
"In the corner of my heart I am terrified. I will actively work through the fear and today that looks like letting myself feel the fear but NOT let it influence my behavior. I CHOOSE to unschool. I have chosen to live a life very different from most people. I will not turn back." - Melissa Lake
Thanks Melissa!
It feels like balm on my heart to read these links:
While we deschool we have been enjoying our days without lessons, but that doesn't mean we're doing nothing. Au contraire. We have lots of time now to...
go to LucasArts where the Yoda Fountain lives. I want one.
Take our time exploring the grounds of Lucas Arts where we can zen out and think deep Yoda like thoughts.
No deschooling process would be complete without jumping right in when Lego's are being played with.
Festivals.
Experiments. Our favorite is sink or float.
Helping mom get the danged bread out of the pan.
Go to cool museums where you get to touch things (very important).
Have your friend read your Tarot via phone call.
Slinky!
Don't forget the monkey platter!
No lessons, no curriculum. Just life and learning all the time.
