Fear Tinted Glasses
2013
I am amazed at how long it takes to build a Lego set. This set took two people, two hours to complete. I was really wishing Monty was home about half way through to help us, which, got me thinking about how I used to get onto Monty for building Austin's sets for him. I had this idea that Austin needed to finish what he started in order to build a strong character. I think he was maybe five.
"Listen here five year old Austin! You must finish that Lego set you wanted other wise you'll become a quitter and quitters never win. They can't get jobs and live in their parent's basement for the rest of their lives. You don't want that do you? Now go finish your Lego set."
Poor guys. They just wanted to build Legos together and I came in all wagging my finger at them. I was looking for the bad with my fear tinted glasses on and I saw it.
The idea we need to condition our children to not be quitters is an idea worth challenging. The underlying message is that children are inherently lazy and we must work to make them want to be productive citizens. It's just not true. Once you take off those fear tinted glasses, it's a lot easier to see.
