Late Night Experiments

2011

Last night around 9 o'clock Austin and I were laying on the couch watching The Mighty B! when he said, "Hey Mom! Let's go do that lava lamp thing!"  My first thought was, "Ugh! I just want to lay here then go to sleep." My second thought was, "GET UP!"

I got up and just the motion of walking towards the kitchen thinking about experimentation was enough to wake me up and get me jazzed.

Making your own lava lamp isn't as exciting as you would think.  I'll admit though, I think I got the mixture wrong.  Seeing the oil sit on top of the water led to a conversation about density.

I remembered I saw something on Pinterest about using common household objects to illustrate different densities, so we grabbed what we had and started experimenting with what was going to sink to the bottom and was going to float on the top, or what might settle into the middle somewhere.

Cooool!

Just saying "sink or float" gets Austin all excited about his favorite game of Sink or Float.  He got a bowl of water and said, "You have two minutes to gather your ingredients!" and started singing a high pressure style song while he gathered.

I grabbed milk. As you can see I have a thing for milk. I love milk! I gathered up all the milk, added food coloring and poured the milk into a glass to see if any one of them was heavier than the rest.  They're all pretty much the same.  I'll spare you the picture of what it all looked like mixed together.

I'm glad I got up!
